Email campaigns offer a mass of advantages over traditional direct mail campaigns. Despite the association with ‘spam’ and now with many email readers having highly effective filters, a properly constructed campaign can deliver the leads that your business sorely needs.
Email shots can be monitored in such detail that we can now tell who has opened the mail, how many times it has been opened, if it has been forwarded, and even who has clicked through to your website and to which pages.
What needs to happen for that success ?
- A good list. The best email address comes from individuals who have signed up at your website through a form – they will be expecting your mail and the chances of it being read increase dramatically. Other lists can be purchased and there is no need for business users to be ‘opted-in’ (unlike individual consumers).
- More content less graphic. Many email campaigns fail immediately because their e-shots are 100% image and no text. This will alert most spam filters and can lead to the whole campaign being wasted.
- Consistency but not persistency. The fastest way to alienate your potential leadbase is to send them emails too often. There are no hard and fast rules, and it depends very much on the list and industry sector, but a daily email will get you blocked very quickly.
- Courtesy. Emails should allow the user to unsubscribe from your list. If not, complaints to your email provider may follow.
- Feedback. Use your email campaign as an opportunity to get the opinion of your potential lead about your product or services area. What is their particular need or pain ?
- Content, content, content. Don’t just cut and paste the same content from your website and expect your prospect to be interested – engage with them in a way which will inspire them to click through and visit.
- Call to action. Be clear about your objective for the e-shot.
