All that glitters is not necessarily gold in the world of effective web design.
Good website design and content will engender ‘stickiness’ in a prospect (i.e. he will stick around) – if the site is structured properly he will be able to find what he is looking for quickly and simply.
Studies have shown that a site has a matter of seconds to convince a visitor that they are in the right place, otherwise (given the immediate nature of the web) they are just a click away from your competitor.
How do we achieve this stickiness ?
There are a few solid principles in web design which allow us to hold on to our prospect :
- Usability. Put simply this means that the site is designed for users rather than to look pretty and show off the designers latest skills. This means a clear and concise structure and that the purpose of the site is clear to the visitor.
- Navigability. Your prospect should be able to find what he looking for quickly and easily. This means simple use of easy to read buttons and the ‘flow’ of the site is built around the way in which someone who is using it might think.
- Aesthetic appeal. Given that this factor has a large subjective weighting, we tend to go with simple, clean but highly professional interfaces – for stickiness you need an authoritative look.
- Brevity. ‘Bells and whistles” on a site need have a clearly designed purpose. A 25 second flash intro may look great, and make the designer feel all warm inside, but it may also help you lose an impatient prospect.
- Fantastic content : If a visitor is to keep coming back to a site they will expect fresh and relevant content. Interesting and useful stuff to read means a regular visitor over time can become a genuine lead.
We also recognize that your business is not the same as any other, and don’t therefore produce an identikit design for any one company. Instead we mesh your own ideas with our own experience of what we know will make you successful.
